I decided to leave Ulan Bator a few days earlier than originally planned because there weather forecast was predicting a bad snow storm for Christmas day with temperatures dropping to -50. I took the train at 7:30am on Christmas Eve which would arrive in Beijing on Christmas Day at 2:30pm.
This train was a Chinese train rather than Russian like I had been traveling on so far. The carriage attendants on our carriage both spoke English very well and were also very friendly and helpful. As we left Mongolia we were traveling through the snow storm that was on its way towards Ulan Bator. It looked pretty cold outside and between the carriages was the worst I've seen so far.
It was so cold outside that at one of the scheduled 20 minute stops the carriage attendant would not let us off the train
As we were traveling through Mongolia the restaurant carriage was Mongolian, when we would cross the border to China they would replace it with a Chinese restaurant carriage. In Sweden Christmas celebrations are on the 24th not the 25th like in Ireland so we decided to change from our usual diet of noodles and have Christmas dinner on the train. The menu had some English so we ordered Steak with Egg and Chips.
